Renewable Energy Costs Plummet as Sector Moves Forward

Lower prices of renewable energy trigger growth in installation capacity and further development of sector.
Solar panel prices have seen a decrease to 46 cents per unit, down from 50 cents in 2016 and $1 in 2012, while renewable energy installation capacity has soared.
India plans to add a a further 17,000 Mw in Installation capacity, according to a recent press release, “[India].. is on its way to become the fourth largest solar market, likely to cross Japan’s growth in solar by 2018” says Jasmeet Khurana, associate director at solar consultancy bridge to India.
Solar energy prices continued to fall elsewhere, such as China “where we are seeing consolidation and bankruptcies in major Chinese companies”, explains Sujoy Ghost, chief executive officer of First Solar.
Europe confirmed this trend as employment in PV (photovoltaic), the biggest renewables employer in 2015, was at a third of its peak in 2011 as solar manufacturing moved away to Asia
“Fossil” fuels?
Recent developments in Germany prove the effectiveness of renewable energy, where hydro and biomass plants supplied 87% of energy, over double it’s average of 33%
“Even without a price on carbon, renewable energy is competing with dirty energy and winning…” says Ben Schreiber, of Friends of the Earth U.S. However, whether renewable energy can completely supplant fossil fuels is open to question, as questions of energy supply are still pertinent.
Yet despite this, Germany is well on its way to meet 100% renewable energy in 2050 and employment in the sector continuing at 5% for 2015 , “continued job growth in the [global] renewable energy sector is significant because it stands in contrast to trends across the energy sector” said Irena director general Adnan Amin.
Currently, 8 million renewable energy jobs are estimated worldwide, including manufacturing, installation and maintenance
